The Sanctuary of Saint Catherine of Siena<\/strong> (Santuario-Casa di Santa Caterina<\/em>) is located on Hill San Antonio in Siena, consisting of the old house of the Benincasa, the family of Catherine and her birthplace, with various arcades, churches and chapels.<\/p>\n

Gantry and galleries<\/h2>\n

The sanctuary is entered by the neoclassical Portico dei Comuni d’Italia<\/strong> (Portico of the Municipalities of Italy<\/em> in English), inaugurated in 1939 to celebrate the proclamation of Saint Catherine as saint patron of Italy by Pope Pius XII. It is decorated with busts of the various popes who have recognized the sacredness and importance of the saint, including Pius II who proclaimed her holy in 1461 or John Paul II who proclaimed her patron saint of Europe in 1999.
The sanctuary has two galleries, the oldest of which was built around 1530-50 by Pelori, a pupil of Peruzzi.<\/p>\n\n\n

The church of the Crucifix<\/h2>\n

She was consecrated in 1623, named after the miraculous crucifixion of Catherine when she received the stigmata in the church of Santa Cristina in Pisa in 1375.
The crucifix that was in Pisa was brought to Siena in the 16th century.
Paintings from the 17th century depict scenes of the life of Saint Catherine.<\/p>\n

Other places of worship<\/h2>\n

Opposite the Church of the Crucifix is the Oratory of the Kitchen<\/strong>, which was originally the kitchen of the Benincasa family. Its earthenware pavement is from the 17th century and the coffered ceiling was redone in the 16th. It is decorated with paintings illustrating passages from the life of the saint, dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries.<\/p>\n

Below, the oratory of the Chamber has paintings from the 19th century as well as the cell of the saint.<\/p>\n

Still down the stairs, there is the oratory of the Tintoria, former workplace of the father of Catherine who was dyer. It was converted into a church between 1465 and 1474.<\/p>\n

Nearby is the sacristy with the statue of Saint Catherine by Neroccio di Landi Bartolomeo (1474) and whose walls are frescoed with scenes from the life of the saint (15th and 16th centuries).<\/p>\n\n\n
