From the 14th century it was a principality, vassal of the Holy Roman Empire until the 19th century, when it was ruled by its sister Elisa Bonaparte.

Things to do in Piombino

A beautiful wall protects the historic center that preserves testimonies of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, whose tower carries Torrione e Rivellino, the fountain of the Fonti di Marina on the old port, the 14th century Casa delle Bifore with its mullioned windows, the Cathedral of Sant’Antimo, the pretty Cappella della Cittadella. The latter is located west of the village, in the Citadel designed by Leonardo da Vinci, where the Palazzo Nuovo was the residence of Elisa Bonaparte in the early 19th century and now the seat of the Archaeological Museum of the Territory of Populonia. This interesting museum has many artifacts from prehistoric, Etruscan and Roman times.
To the east is the massive Piombino Castle, whose core dates back to the 12th-13th centuries, also home to the Castle Museum and medieval ceramics
The large Piazza Bovio is a vast terrace surrounded by the sea, leading to the lighthouse
