Magliano in Toscana<\/strong> is a pretty village in the Maremma region, which preserves medieval walls, a charming historic center, and renowned restaurants throughout the area.
What impresses most are its beautiful walls, almost intimidating when you get closer to Magliano from the coast, overlooking a hill surrounded by olive trees and vineyards.
Several necropolises were found around the area, testifying to an Etruscan occupation before the Roman settlement of Heba.
The Aldobrandeschi counts controlled these lands in the 9th century, which was succeeded by the Republic of Siena, the original city of the Walls, still well preserved.<\/p>\n\n\n

What to see in Magliano<\/h2>\n

The rampart walk<\/strong> is not to be missed if you pass in Magliano, along the path of
round, with a superb view on the Maremma, the panorama extending up to the sea. These walls are among the best preserved in Tuscany, dating back to the beginning of the 14th century with square towers and circular towers dating from the 15th century.<\/p>\n

The historic centre<\/strong> retains its medieval structure between Porta San Giovanni to the south and Porta di San Martino to the north, with palaces, especially the 13th century Palazzo di Checco il Bello adorned with a gothic facade and coat of arms, or the church Pieve di San Giovanni Battista having Roman origins, with a Renaissance facade, but with Gothic windows on the side, decorated with frescoes from the Sienese school and with an ancient baptismal font of the fifteenth century. The Priors’ Palace has a coat of arms of the podest\u00e0 that ruled. San Martino has an interesting portal with sculptures.<\/p>\n\n\n

Magliano surroundings<\/h2>\n

At 2 km are the suggestive remains of the Abbey of San Bruzio<\/strong>, a Romanesque building built in the 11th-12th centuries, with the remains of the apse and the octagonal drum that supported the dome, and some pretty sculptures of Lombard style capitals.<\/p>\n\n\n

Around the same time as Magliano are the fortified villages of Montiano<\/strong> and Pereta<\/strong> with its Porte de Ponente.<\/p>\n

The Ulivo della Strega<\/strong>, the\u00a0Olive tree of the Witch<\/em> in English, is near Magliano in an olive grove, 3500 years old with an unusual shape. Pagan ceremonies were apparently held around him in the middle ages.<\/p>\n

The Doganella excavations<\/strong> between Albinia and Magliano are the site of the Etruscan city of Kalo\u00f9sion<\/strong>, which was built by Vulci in the 7th century BC to control the valley of the Albegna, destroyed in the 3rd century BC.C. Only a small part of it has been explored.<\/p>\n

Several Etruscan necropolises are located around Magliano, some of the beautiful tombs are decorated with paintings that have survived, such as a bearded sphinx in the tomb of Phairae, four life-sized winged lions in the tomb of Saint Andrew.<\/p>\n

In a tomb in the area of Magliano, was found in 1883 the famous Magliano\u2019s lead<\/strong>, a vaguely circular lead object of 8 cm diameter from the 5th century BC with a long Etruscan inscription in spiral with 70 words, one of the longest known Etruscan texts, now preserved in the Florence Archaeological Museum.<\/p>\n
