Piancastagno<\/strong> is an ancient village of medieval origin on the slopes of Mount Amiata, perched on a ledge overlooking the valley of the Paglia and the Cassia.
Its origin dates back to the 10th century, when its lands were exploited by the Abbey of San Salvatore d’Abadia. Under the Republic of Siena in the fifteenth century, the fortress and a new enclosure were built.<\/p>\n

The Rocca Aldobrandesca<\/strong> is by far the most imposing building in Piancastagnaio. This fortress dates from the 15th century, beautifully restored in the 20th century. It houses a museum. It is close to a park with views of the valley. Past the castle gate you enter into the oldest part of the city, on the slope with its three old quarters (Borgo, Castello and Voltaia). In Borgo are the old springs with washing-house.<\/p>\n

In the old town, the charming Piazza Matteotti<\/strong> with the Podest\u00e0 Palace and the 14th century Palazzo del Comune, and against the palace the Colonna della Giustizia<\/strong> topped by the coat of arms of the Republic of Siena. Nearby is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, discreet, simple and suggestive.<\/p>\n\n\n

Outside the village, the small church of San Francesco is preceded by a loggia and preserves frescoes from the Sienese school of the fourteenth century.
The Piatto delle Streghe is an ancient fountain basin that was in a palace.<\/p>\n\n\n
