It is perched at 605 metres above sea level, between charming Tuscan hills planted with vines and olive trees, straddling the two valleys of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latoscane.net\/en\/category\/destinations-en\/tuscany-regions-countryside\/articles-about-val-di-chiana-region\/\">Valdichiana<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latoscane.net\/en\/val-dorcia-in-tuscany\/\">Val d&#8217;Orcia<\/a>. <br \/>The surrounding vineyards provide the material for producing one of the best wines in Italy, the <strong>Vino Nobile di Montepulciano<\/strong>. It is also a region known for its cheese and charcuterie, as well as pasta, honey and lentils.<\/p>\n<p>The city developed mainly in the early Middle Ages, then in the Renaissance with beautiful palaces. In the surrounding area there are many beautiful villages of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latoscane.net\/en\/val-dorcia-in-tuscany\/\">Val d&#8217;Orcia<\/a> such as Pienza, Monticchiello, Montalcino and San Quirico d&#8217;Orcia. You can also relax at the thermal springs of Bagno Vignoni.<\/p>\n<h2>Monuments and heritage<\/h2>\n<p>The historic centre of Montepulciano is medieval and Renaissance, built on an elongated hill, protected by its ancient wall and keeping access doors. Its alleys and stairs wind between the beautiful imposing stone palaces, joining the Piazza Grande to the west, and at this western end is the Medici Fortress. This central square is embellished by the majestic presence of the Communal Palace, other ancient palaces and the cathedral.
