The famous Leaning Tower of Pisa<\/strong> is located on the Square of Miracles<\/strong><\/a> (Piazza dei Miracoli), also known as Piazza Duomo<\/strong>. It is known worldwide as one of the emblems of Italy, both for its elegance and its unusual inclination.
It is 56 metres high and has six floors with pretty circular loggias.<\/p>\n

History and presentation<\/h2>\n

The construction of the Tower of Pisa began in 1173 and continued until the middle of the 14th century to become the bell tower of the Cathedral of Pisa. Due to a very loose floor, it began to lean shortly after the start of the work. For this reason, they were interrupted after the completion of the first three levels, to be resumed in 1275 under the direction of Giovanni di Simone and Giovanni Pisano. They completed the following three rings, with a slight curve opposite the slope to counterbalance the inclination.<\/p>\n\n\n

Today, the tower is tilted at about 5\u00b0. To prevent further bending and risk of breaking, 900 tonnes of lead counterweights were buried during a consolidation that lasted from 1990 to 2001. This moved its centre of gravity inward enough.
The tower\u2019s fa\u00e7ade was recently restored in 2010.
Each of the six floors has a circular loggia, and take up the motif of the cathedral. Inside, the 294 steps of the spiral staircase lead to the top from where you have a superb view of the Place des Miracles.<\/p>\n

The structure of the building is special. These are two concentric cylinders connected by an internal spiral staircase. On the outer cylinder are loggias formed by columns on which are supported by semicircular arches.
The block at the base of the tower was added in the 19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n
