It was built in the Renaissance by the <strong>pope Pius II<\/strong> (Enea Silvio Piccolomini) who wanted to make his native village called then Corsignano an ideal city (he was born there in 1405), while retaining the medieval fabric. For this he hired the greatest architects of the time, with the mission to shape a city with a humanistic face, including <strong>Bernardo Rossellino<\/strong>. The historical centre of Pienza is small and flat, ideal for a nice walk, with a long balcony that offers a splendid view on the hills of the Val d&#8217;Orcia.<\/p>\n<p>See also <a
