Little visited, however, you can still find the testimonies of its industrial and mining past, when marble extraction attracted workers from all over Italy. Activities that are much less likely to provide jobs today.

Close to the coast, the centre is quite small and you can visit some of the most important quarries in the area.
On the coast Marina di Carrara is an active seaside resort, especially in summer when its beautiful beach is taken by storm.

The region was already inhabited in the 9th century BC by Celtic ligures.
The city was considered a capital of Italian and international anarchist thought. It is still popular today for some people, although the form has become more folk.

Things to do and see in Carrara and surroundings

Piazza Alberica

The central square of Carrara is piazza Alberica, surrounded by its colourful buildings, with the neoclassical fountain, the Palace of the Loggias in Renaissance style.

Carrara Cathedral

The cathedral was built from the 12th to the 14th century, with a superb rose window on the front and a separate Ligurian bell tower. The inside is almost empty.

Cybo Malaspina Palace

This Ducal Palace is made up of two parts: the medieval Malaspina castle and the Renaissance palace. It hosts the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, with bibliographic and artistic collections.

Civic Museum of Marble

Founded in 1982, it is entirely dedicated to the production and processing of marble, divided into 8 sections: geology, industrial archaeology, artistic craftsmanship, modern.

Colonnata

Located on the slopes of the Apuan Alps, this small village Colonnata is famous throughout Italy for the production of lard and its majestic white marble quarries.
In the quarries, at la Cava Gioia a large mural depicts Michelangelo’s David, by the Brazilian artist Kobra. The Cava Museo Fantiscritti is an original creation with life-size sculptures that testify to past life in the area. The Michelangelo quarry also documents the work of the workmen with sculptures.
It is also a starting point for mountain excursions.

Where is Carrara, map

Travelers' Map is loading...
If you see this after your page is loaded completely, leafletJS files are missing.

Sources and information

Carrara Tourist Portals: www.visitacarrara.it, www.visittuscany.com

Apuan Riviera: www.visittuscany.com, www.visitrivieraapuana.it,

General informations: en.wikipedia.org

Presentation Since antiquity, Carrara has been famous for its white marble, extracted from the hundreds of quarries that surround the city.
