This coastal area, north of Massa Carrara, is commonly known as the Cinque Terre, which means the Five Lands.
It is located in Liguria, but very close to Tuscany, which makes it a destination of choice during a stay in Tuscany.
Its appeal is due to the picturesque charm of the typical villages perched on the cliffs overlooking the Ligurian Sea. They have been classified since 1997 in the Unesco World Heritage sites.
The landscape is rugged and almost austere, modeled by the numerous agricultural terraces that descend the slopes from their summits to the sea.
These five villages, from north to south, are Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. Unesco describes them as a “cultural landscape”, places that bring together history, picturesque and traditions, especially with local products such as lemon, virgin olive oil, honey, anchovies and wine.
This region has more than 120 km of trails winding through the villages offering breathtaking panoramic views of the majestic coastline.
Ideally, you should spend at least one day exploring each village, while enjoying the golden sandy beaches and the clear waters of the Ligurian Sea.
