Cortona

Palazzo Comunale

Cortona is a small and welcoming town in the Val di Chiana, in the province of Arezzo, near the Umbria region.
It is surrounded by walls with remaining parts from the Etruscan and the Roman periods .
Built on a hill that reaches 600 meters, one benefits from the summit of a beautiful view on the surroundings. It can be reached by foot from the center after a steep climb.

The center is located around the Piazza della Repubblica, which overlooks the town hall with the Palazzo Comunale.
Several interesting places include the Diocesan Museum (where there is a sign of the Annunciation, by Fra Angelico) and the MAEC (Museum of the Etruscan Academy). There are many Etruscan objects discovered in the area. Also worth mentioning is the Archaeological Park of Cortona.

At the top of the hill are the beautiful Sanctuary of Santa Margherita (saint of the city), and the fortress of Girifalco.
The road that runs along the city walls offers beautiful views of the surrounding area.

The area is famous for producing very good wines. In the center there are wine bars, as well as local gastronomy. La Chianina, is one of the oldest and most famous cattle breeds in Italy.

Just outside the walls of Cortona is the Franciscan hermitage Le Celle, which is the first monastery built by St Francis of Assisi in 1211, inside still lives a small community of brothers.

In summer, the Tuscan Sun Festival is organized in Cortona. Dedicated to art, each year, there are international artists.
