Capital of the Tuscany, Florence has about 375,000 inhabitants. It is crossed by a river, the Arno.
It is considered as the cradle of the Renaissance, an important artistic, architectural and cultural movement which grew there in the beginning of the 14th century. Its heritage is strongly marked by its historical buildings, monuments and very rich museums.
In the Middle Ages, Florence was an important cultural, commercial and financial center.
It was marked by the long domination of the Medici family (1434-1494, 1512-1527 and 1530-1737). After the unification of Italy, it was briefly the capital of Italy, from 1865 to 1871.
The most important monuments are the Duomo (Cathedral) and Piazza Duomo, the Signoria Square and the Vecchio Palace, Ponte Vecchio, the churches of Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella.
Its most important museums are: the Uffizi Gallery, the Palatina Gallery of Palazzo Pitti, the Bargello and the Archaeological Museum.
